EU Policy makers about the quality of teacher educators

04 October 2010 - General announcements

In June 2010, a peer learning activity (PLA) was organized by the European Commission's Thematic Working Group on Professional Decvelopment of Teachers, focusing on the professional quality of tecaher educators.

During this PLA, policy makers and teacher educators from 7 European members states discussed possible policy measures that could promote the professional quality of teacher educators. The theme of the PLA was motivated by the conviction that  the quality of teacher educators has a large impact on the learning of student teachers and therefore on the quality of teachers in schools.

The discussions were inspired by input from international experts (Anja Swennen from ATEE, Marco Snoek from The Netherlands and Jón Torfu Jónasson from Iceland) and by policy examples from The netherlands, Sweden, Flanders and Hungary.

The final report of the PLA addresses issues like the need for special attention to the quality of teacher educators, the identitity of teacher educators, elements of professional quality of teacher educators and roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders, including the role of the professional group of teacher educators themselves.

The PLA is considered as a first first attempt to map out the field of policy concerning Teacher Educators.

The full report of the PLA can be found here.
