The University of Coimbra (UC), established in 1290 is one of the oldest universities in Europe and its historical buildings are the premises of a medieval palace situated on the highest hill of the town of Coimbra overlooking the Mondego river. St. Peter College, St Michael Chapel, the Rector Palace, the Grand Hall, the King John Library are world renown landmarks situated on campus.
Nowadays, the UC is an indisputable reference in higher education and research in Portugal, due to the high quality of the courses taught at its eight Faculties and to the advances achieved in pure and applied research in various areas of knowledge. Since about 20% of its students come from abroad, UC has also strong internationalization that can be felt in the international atmosphere created by the gathering together, on a permanent basis, of students, teachers and researchers from different cultural backgrounds coming from about 60 countries around the world.
The organization of the Conference involves the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT) and the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPCE).
Among the eight Faculties of UC, FCT is the largest in number of students and teachers. Teacher education graduation courses were created in 1971, and since then, FCT has developed a prominent role in science teacher education. With the Bologna process, three teaching masters were developed. A PhD course on Science teaching has also been implemented.
FPCE was created in 1980 and so it is one of the youngest Faculties of the University. In 1985, FPCE moved to the College of St. Augustine, an historical building from the 16th century and, since then it has played an important role in initial teacher education and in teacher lifelong learning. The education Masters' degree that has been developed and the actual teacher education PhD courses are examples of its achievements.
