faculty_of_education.jpgThis Winter conference is a joined effort of the RDC Primary and Early Years Teacher Education and the RDC ICT in Teacher Education.

After the success of the first Winter Conference in Desenzano, Italy on life-long learning of teachers through the different stages of their careers, ATEE is pleased to announce the second which is to take place in Prague, Czech Republic. This conference is supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, Charles University in Prague and the Department for Primary Education and the Department of IT and Technical Education at the Faculty of Education.

Through the Winter Conferences, RDCs further widen their research. The RDCs Pre-school and Primary Education and Teacher Education and IT are the organisers for this 2010 international event.

The conference is open to members and non-members and all participants will be expected to engage in workshops, roundtables and interactive sessions some of which will involve use of ICT.

Target group
Teacher educators, school leaders, teachers, inspectors, educational consultants and researchers working in the field of early years and primary education, and information and communication technology in initial teacher education, professional development and ICT applications in pre-school and primary education together with other experts involved in this field, from all levels of education.

RDCs on Pre-school and Primary Education and on ICTATEE's Research and Devleopment Centers on Pre-School and Primary Education and on ICT in Teacher Education are long-standing RDCs. This group of experts considers it a necessity and a privilege to organize the second winter university conference allowing experts and participants in the world of early years and primary education and information technology in TE to explore and develop strategies to promote these themes among teachers taking into account their various contributions in relation to the centrality of the development of the child as a future member of society

“Teachers and educators have passed from an era when the profession was one of tradition and transmission to one where we have become agents of change.“ (Clouder et al, 2008, p. 32)

Pre-school, Primary Education and ICT for the future of Europe The purpose of the conference is to draw together teacher educators and others from Europe and beyond with an interest in pre-school and primary teacher education and professional development.
The outcome of the conference will be an electronic publication of the proceedings which will consist of comparative approaches and ideas about pre-school and primary education teacher education and professional development in Europe.
Early Years has been declared a priority for the European Commission for Education and Culture for the budget period 2011 – 2016.

The future of Europe
The title emphasises the now-recognised central importance of education in the early years and subsequent primary education. Without a firm foundation, young people have little chance of achieving their potential. The importance of the home as the place where formative learning first occurs and the recognition that where mothers are educated then children are more likely to succeed in the school system and to be successful members of society together with the growth in the use of technology as a tool for learning lead us inevitably to the conclusion that the RDCs involved in developing this conference have the most important role in Europe and in the future of education, and the future of the education of teachers both initially and in their professional and academic development.
If Europe is to achieve its ambition to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world hen investment in the early stages of a child’s learning when they learn more than at any other time in their lives would seem to be a sine qua non.
Information and Communication Technology is one of the means by which Europe is expanding into a series of knowledge-based societies. In bringing together experts in the field of ICT and its application in teacher education, the conference attendees/participants will gain insights into how such technologies can enhance their teaching and research.
Thus the emphasis for this conference.

General guidelines for authors of full papers

All accepted submissions must be full papers.

Guidelines for authors can de downloaded here.

After double blind review selected papers may be published in a theme issue of the European Journal of Teacher Education; other selected papers will be published in conference proceedings.

Conference formats
Individual papers Parallel sessions will be organised in which people can present their work. If possible, individual papers will be grouped in thematic sessions. Each speaker will have about 12 minutes of presentation time, followed by 18 minutes of discussion or active involvement in an activity.

Workshops The aim of a workshop is to create an interactive and active learning forum in which scholars and practitioners can be inspired by colleagues. Workshops may, for instance, provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge about how to deal with needs in certain career stages of teachers in practice, about professional development in specific learning contexts, or about specific competences of in-service learning facilitators. A workshop will take one hour and a half.

Poster The aim of the poster session is to give a forum to researchers who are not yet able to present results, but want to discuss their research design, methods, etc. or to give a forum to practitioners who want discuss a design for in service learning practice. The posters will be linked to opportunities for round table discussion.

Symposia
A symposium is a group of 2 to 4 presentations (preferable 2 or 3 speakers plus a discussant) devoted to a specific topic and is one hour and a half to two hours in length. A symposium aims to be an active discussion forum on a relevant issue within the domain of in service learning. Proposals should address topics of broad concern to the participants. Symposia should be submitted as single submissions by the symposium organiser/convenor.

Brainstorming session
A brainstorming session is a group creativity session at least of six people with the aim to generate a large number of proposals and ideas about a solution of a given problem.

Panel Session, Forum Discussion
This is an opportunity to hear a brief (2 – 3 minutes) input on a fixed theme from a panel of experts. This would be followed by questions from other participants to the panel members.

Publication of papers

The Organising Committee of the Winter Conference in February 2010 to be held at Charles University in Prague is very conscious of the importance of publication to academic researchers and academic practitioners. We are, therefore, establishing an ISBN numbered digital publication for full and refereed papers accepted by the Academic Committee of the conference. Please be asssured, therefore, that there will be a lasting presence on the ATEE website under the section on conferences in order that such papers will be available for future reference. The process is simple and those of you who would like to know more and who are working within universities should ask your university librarians (or Learning Centre managers) about the ISBN system.
