Association for Teacher Education in Europe

Knowledge Creativity in Teacher EducationEducation for Knowledge Creation

From August 29th to September 2nd, 2009, the 34th ATEE took place in Palma de Mallorca.

The conference brought together more than 400 teacher educators from more than 40 countries within and outside Europe.

THE PROCEEDINGS ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

The conference was integrated with a meeting of the Summer Institute of the University of Toronto. This created the opportunity to bring together two knowledge networks for exchange and new friendships.

Knowledge Creativity in Teacher Education
Education for Knowledge Creation

2.jpgThe theme of the conference will be centered on what is known about Knowledge Creation (KC) in different cultures as well as which mindsets are most appropriate to develop KC in Teacher Education for a world which demands creativity of the many, not just of a few artists and research scientists.

At present, Europe needs to strengthen its capacity for creativity to respond effectively to the development of a knowledge society. Therefore, educational training systems should cater to the development of competences by supporting creativity, with a view to finding original solutions to various life aspects of either a personal, occupational or social nature.

The main objective of the Conference is to find out whether educational practices of today’s institutions, which offer initial and/or in-service teacher education, provide effective solutions toward cultivating the learning dispositions that underpin creativity.

Thus, there are challenging conceptual issues about whether educational goals for knowledge creation should be formulated in terms of skills, knowledge, habits of mind, personal traits, character development or acculturation, among others.

Some research questions to be considered are listed below:

  • People concerned with improvements in education and with the advancement of knowledge like to consider closely-related questions such as the following: “How is new knowledge created?”, “How is new knowledge possible?” and “How does new knowledge work?”
  • Conceptual tools for Knowledge Creation and mindsets are commonly recognized as playing a crucial part in this process. Some conceptual tools are the following: logical reasoning, combination, analogy; self-organization; ideas interacting with ideas; curiosity, imagination, persistence.
  • We look for satisfactory or problematic answers which may explain the process of producing new knowledge, which can be made more likely through effective education policies.

Next to the conference theme, the conference will offer room for papers that fit within the themes of the Research and Development Centers that are active within the ATEE and for business meetings of these RDCs. See for more information the list of RDCs on this website.
